In 1968, Shirley Chisholm became the first woman of color to be elected to the House of Representatives. Representing a district in Brooklyn, NY, Chisholm fought for women's issues. She also was a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus. In 1972, she became the first woman of color to run in the primaries for President on the Democratic ticket.
