Cultivating Perpetual Care Communities: A Richmond Cemetery Collaboratory Symposium

Join us for the Richmond Cemetery Collaboratory’s first symposium exploring how long-term care of cemeteries is created, expressed and supported — particularly in historically Black cemeteries. Topics include physical care, volunteer management, preservation plans, policy-making, archive creation, research and community-building. The symposium will offer morning sessions on the indexing and transcription of archival records or the opportunity to visit Black cemeteries in Richmond. Limited transportation will be offered to and from local cemeteries for hands-on demonstrations. Afternoon sessions will include speakers from the Friends of East End Cemetery and the Woodland Restoration Foundation, as well as staff members from Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Richmond, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, and other local collaborators. Join us to connect, network and learn! A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. This event is sponsored by the Library of Virginia, the Richmond Cemetery Collaboratory, the University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University. For more information, contact Jessi Bennett at jessica.bennett@lva.virginia.gov or 804.692.3793. This event is free and open to the public. Limited free parking is available underneath the Library at 800 East Broad Street.
