"From Ulster to Appalachia" is a lively and insightful musical journey across oceans and generations with master fiddler Mike Ferry. Blending performance with storytelling, Mike traces the path of the Scots-Irish from Ulster to the American colonies, exploring how their independent spirit, deep-rooted work ethic, and rich fiddle traditions helped shape early American culture. Through song, spirited tunes, and engaging historical insight, he reveals how this resilient community left an enduring mark on the sound of Appalachia.
Drawing from his own heritage (three grandparents from Donegal) Mike brings special passion to the distinctive Donegal style of fiddling, demonstrating its driving rhythms and unique bowing techniques. He also explores the musical bridge between Protestant Scots-Irish settlers and the Catholic Irish who arrived in great numbers during the mid-1800s, showing how their shared traditions intertwined to influence early American music. A seasoned performer who has toured nationwide, Mike’s original compositions have been featured on television programs including Dawson's Creek and Scrubs. Presented in the warm, welcoming listening room of Richmond Folk Music, this performance promises an evening of vibrant music, history, and community.
