During World War II, the U.S. Merchant Marines played a key logistical role in the transport of goods and military personnel. Merchant Marines faced dangerous conditions under threat from enemy submarines and mine fields, sailing often unescorted in their effort to deliver needed supplies to Allied forces. 243,000 Merchant Marines served during the war. Between 1939 and 1945, roughly 9,521 merchant mariners lost their lives serving as a part of the U.S. military.
