Westport, CT – First Folk Sunday is going Irish. Four of the finest Irish musicians in Fairfield County are coming together on Sunday December 1, bringing the traditional lilting music of Ireland to the Saugatuck Rowing Club and First Folk Sunday.
John Brennan (a native San Diegan) who began his career as a rock and roll lead guitarist with POCO, The Eagles, Graham Nash, and The Byrds) discovered his heavily Irish roots when he relocated to New York City to work in the world of jingles. He found himself recording and performing with All-Ireland Champions button accordionist John Whelan; All-Ireland Champion fiddler and head of the Irish Music Dept at Boston College, Sheila Falls Keohane; and the world-renowned National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship winner and iconic Irish fiddler, Kevin Burke (The Bothy Band, Patrick Street, Celtic Fiddle Festival, the Pound Ridge Sessions).
For First Folk Sunday, Brennan has brought together the talents of button accordionist Loretta Egan Murphy (Cherish the Ladies, Shamrock Traditional Music Society); Eugene Bender (Sligo style traditional Irish fiddler), and Mark Demchak(bodhran player – the Irish drum). At this level of playing from these players, you will think you are in Ireland. It is also quite possible that an Irish breakfast will be on the menu.
Joining these world-class Irish musicians in song will be First Folk Sunday's own Irish lass, Suzanne Sheridan. Having recently traveled to Ireland and connected with her Irish family in Dowra and Black Lion, Sheridan took the music of her homeland to heart and, like Brennan, found her Irish roots and the music that goes with that.
For tickets to the performance on December 1, click on the First Folk Sunday website. The music cover charge is $15. Table service is available for those who would like to enjoy brunch or lunch, and cocktails and beverages are offered, also.
Doors open at noon for this uplifting Irish musical afternoon. There is ample parking at the Saugatuck Rowing Club with additional parking across the street at 518 Riverside Avenue.
