The French of New Bedford: The Early Years BOOK LAUNCH EVENT

The public is invited to a book launch for Spinner Publications' newest book, 'The French of New Bedford: The Early Years. The launch is taking place on Saturday, December 14, 2024 at 10:30am at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 1359 Acushnet Avenue, New Bedford, MA. Written by Alfred H. Saulniers, 'The French of New Bedford' is a sweeping look at the impact of the French community in the city, including the building of St. Anthony of Padua Church itself at the dawn of the 20th century. Author Alfred Saulniers will discuss the book and sign copies of the magisterial, photo-filled publication. Light refreshments will be available. In 'The French of New Bedford' Alfred Saulniers tells the story of the city’s French speakers, from their arrival and growth through their eventual decline caused by new immigration restrictions, the Great Textile Strike of 1928 and the Great Depression. Most came from French-speaking Canada; others came from Europe – France, Belgium and Switzerland; a few came from French overseas territories, including some people of color. Far from a slim book of pictures and text, this intricate history shows how immigrants formed a set of vibrant communities. It includes approximately 350 rare historical photographs of people, places and celebrations; sports events, clubs, businesses, industries, streets and neighborhoods.
