Artists Reception "The Weight of Air" by Chenlu Hou / "Solitary Refinement" by Brooke Erin Goldstein
Chenlu Hou's sculptures are imaginative depictions of women, animals, and plants rendered as hand-built ceramic objects. Her work "takes storytelling as a meeting point of concurrent and past. The experiences I have had while living in the United States since 2017 and the culture I have inherited while living in China fused to form these narrative ceramic objects. Building with clay seems a metaphoric process that speaks to my adaptation to a new environment,
from frightening to the mundane - intimidation, distortion, excitement, confusion, and eventually, celebration. I use airbrushes to apply vibrant color underglazes onto ceramic objects. This technique allows for intricacies and layering possibilities, the fluidity and depth of colors achieved through airbrushing create a dreamy, dynamic portrayal of cultural celebration."
Brooke Goldstein creates quilted paintings that use narrative imagery to explore experiences of loneliness. She says "In my practice as a textile artist, I use our human connection with fabric and repeating patterns to engross the viewer in an emotional experience. From the moment we are born our relationship with textiles begins. Color, texture and repeating patterns not only cover us but surround us. Fibers are the supporting players of our memories and daily actions. Using fiber and surface design to provide immersive, sensory based, discovery to people of all ages and backgrounds is what inspires me to create. I focus on creating a visual for the complex emotions we experience on our journey through life. I believe allowing us to see how we feel helps us as individuals and as a society to create a greater understanding of the universal human experience. My work is designed to promote empathy."
Both shows will be on view from April 19- May 24, 2025.
