Newport Classical: Cellist Jonathan Swensen Returns


After a memorable debut as a 2024 Festival Artist, Newport Classical begins 2026 with the highly anticipated return of cellist Jonathan Swensen. Honored with the 2022 Avery Fisher Career Grant and recently awarded joint First Prize at the 2024 Naumburg International Cello Competition, Swensen has won international acclaim. Described as “a musician of charisma and thrilling physicality” (BBC Music Magazine), he brings his signature intensity and imagination back to Newport for an evening that promises both passion and artistry. On the program is Beethoven’s 12 Variations on “Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen” in F Major, Op. 66, Leoš Janáček’s Pohádka (Fairy Tale) for Cello and Piano, Robert Schumann’s Five Pieces in Folk Style, Op. 102, Bartók’s Rhapsody No. 1 for Cello and Piano, and Shostakovich’s Cello Sonata in D minor, Op. 40. Newport Classical's Chamber Series takes place at Newport Classical Recital Hall in downtown Newport, known for its striking architecture and excellent acoustics. The Chamber Series reaffirms Newport Classical’s commitment to year-round classical music programming.
