George T. Downing’s Maquette Unveiling Oyster Fest Reception

Celebrate the Unveiling...George T. Downing's Maquette Oyster Fest Reception The model of the first statue in Newport to a person of color, George T. Downing, will be unveiled at an Oyster reception and presentation at the Newport Art Museum from 6-9pm February 28, a Black History Month event hosted by Rhode Island Slave History Medallions. Robb Dimmick of Stages of Freedom will speak on the importance of recognizing Mr. Downing, entrepreneur and civil rights advocate for combatting racism. Sculptor, Vinnie Bagwell, will talk about her process in creating the model. We believe that art and history can change the way we see one another. Together we will honor the past educate the present, and inspire the future. Your presence and support will make all the difference. Public art and public programs spark conversations that lead to greater understanding and stronger communities. The statue will be placed at the corner of Pelham and Bellevue Avenue, across from the street that bears his name. George T. Downing helped provide the funds for the city to purchase of the land that became Touro Park. Purchase tickets online for $50 or at the door for $55.
