In this creative nonfiction workshop, writers will play with myriad forms of the personal narrative—such as lyric forms, research braids, flash, micro-essays, and hermit crab forms—to discover unexpected voices with which to tell emotionally tender or tough stories. We'll read a variety of published essays from the likes of Ira Sukrungruang, Neema Avashia, Brian Doyle, Gwendolyn Wallace, Ryan Van Meter, Roxane Gay, Cheryl Strayed, Brenda Miller, Sabrina Imbler, and Sei Shōnagon, then kick-start our drafts with in-class writing exercises. We’ll practice new techniques in a safe and supportive environment and offer thoughtful, targeted feedback that focuses on what’s working in our essays and how to strengthen and refine them.
Open to writers of all levels and genres. This is a 4-week workshop, with a 2-hour session each week. Please prepare for approximately 3 to 5 hours of work between sessions, including time for your own writing.
This 4-week workshop meets on Thursdays from 6-8pm at LitArts RI on the following dates:
Thursday, February 5
Thursday, February 12
Thursday, February 19
Thursday, February 26
