Part III– A Bridge Too Far: OPERATION MARKET GARDEN, September 1944 This lecture covers the failed OPERATION MARKET GARDEN, the attempt to establish an Allied bridgehead across the Rhine River in the Netherlands. The ultimate objective was to outflank German forces by landing British, American, and Polish parachute units to capture key river bridges at Eindhoven, Nijmegen, and Arnhem. If successful, British XXX Corps armored force would make the 60-mile dash to the Rhine. The operation failed and the British 1st Airborne Division and Polish Parachute Brigade were decimated at Arnhem and the survivors forced to evacuate.
