Part II – Day of Days: OPERATIONS NEPTUNE, OVERLORD, and D-Day, June to August 1944
This lecture covers the invasion of France by Allied forces in June 1944 codenamed OPERATION NEPTUNE. In the public perception, the landings along the Normandy coast are known simply as D-Day. Once the beachhead was fully secured, Allied forces – British, American, Canadian, and Free French – moved inland quickly capturing Cherbourg in Brittany and driving towards Paris, which was captured in late August. The landings evolved into OPERATION OVERLORD, the Battle for France. The operations firmly established a Second Front thus, when combined with the Soviet Union’s OPERATION BAGRATION, squeezed German forces from two directions, pushing the Wehrmacht back towards the German homeland.
