Stanley Carpenter WWII in Europe PART I

Part I – Their Finest Hour: Battles of Britain and the Atlantic, 1939-43 This lecture covers the sea Battle of the Atlantic from 1939-1943 and the air Battle of Britain in 1940-41. Without significant surface naval forces to confront the British Royal Navy, the German Navy or Kriegsmarine conducted a commerce war against Britain using their submarine (U-boat) forces. The Battle of the Atlantic against Allied shipping between 1940 and 1943 threatened to knock Britain out of the war before the United States became fully engaged. In the air, once France fell, Germany attempted to invade southern England, but had to destroy the British Royal Air Force (RAF) first. They failed as the RAF held on to defeat the German Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain. Both battles set the stage for the Allied invasion of France into Normandy in June 1944, the Battle of France, and the drive towards Germany from June 1944 to May 1945. Free.
