The American Band will present a concert on April 16th at 7:30pm in The Fine Arts Center Recital Hall of the University of Rhode Island. The band, led by Dr. Brian Cardany, will present a program titled Icons & Legends, and includes music by Roger Cichy, Joseph Willcox Jenkins, Jon F. Howe, Carolyn Bremer, Frank Ticheli, Leonard Bernstein, John Williams, and John Philip Sousa. The concert will include the premiere performance of Jon F. Howe’s The Tale of Cú Chulainn, a cantata inspired by a hero of Irish mythology. Mezzo-soprano Isobel MucCullough will perform Elisedd Knapp-McGinley’s libretto with the American Band on this piece. The American Band was founded in 1837 in Providence, RI, and is one of the oldest community bands in the United States. The band was present at the First Battle of Bull Run in 1861, and played tunes on the Crescent Park Pier to welcome guests to the amusement park off the ferry in the 1890s. The band has grown from a brass and drum group into a 60-member wind ensemble. Tickets are $15 general admission, $10 for students and seniors, and free for children ages 12 and under. Tickets are available through Eventbrite at https://tinyurl.com/ambandicons Tickets will also be available at the door one hour before the concert begins.
