Gallery Reception: Victoria Guerina - Portraits

This March, the Gallery at Central presents “Portraits,” drawings and sculptures by Rhode Island artist Victoria Guerina. Meet the artist at the Gallery Reception on Friday, March 14, from 5 to 7 pm. And, visit the virtual gallery at https://www.centralchurch.us/the-gallery-at-central/ Vicky’s busts, in bronze and resin, primarily depict historical women whose hard work and sacrifices contributed to the rights and freedoms women enjoy today. They were inspired by “The First Wave,” her permanent sculpture installation of 20 life-sized bronze figures created for the Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, N.Y. with Boston University professor emeritus and sculptor Lloyd Lillie. Her drawings were primarily created during portrait sessions at the Pawtucket Arts Collaborative. They depict a variety of “regular people” – of all different ages and ethnicities. Vicky likes to concentrate on the form and how light and shadow define it. Each subject’s personality often comes through before she’s even aware of it. Vicky's work demonstrates her understanding of anatomy and structure – learned while pursuing veterinary medicine and studying biology and chemistry at Penn State University and University of Pittsburgh. However, her husband encouraged her to return to her artistic dreams, so she attended Boston University’s rigorous program in figurative art, earning an MFA in sculpture. While raising a family, Vicky worked with several well-known local sculptors including Nancy Schoen (“Make Way for Ducklings,” Boston Common). She has won numerous awards and exhibits her art both locally and nationally. Her public sculptures include “Martin Richard Memorial,” a life-sized bronze statue of the eight-year-old boy lost during the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing (Bridgewater State University), the seven-foot bronze “Firefighter Memorial,” (Bristol, R.I.), and bust of women’s rights advocate “Anna Gardner” (Whaling Museum, Nantucket, Mass.). In addition, Vicky recently co-curated a national exhibition at the Warwick (R.I.) Center for the Arts and completed a drawing of Nobel Prize winner Maria Goeppert Mayer (Gather RI, Providence, open Summer 2025). Vicky is a member of the National Sculpture Society, Pawtucket Arts Collaborative, Attleboro Arts Museum, 19 on Paper, and Warwick Center for the Arts. She also serves on the Board of Directors and as a Synergy artist and Elected Artist at Art League Rhode Island. Her studio is located in Pawtucket, R.I.
