The French of New Bedford - Author Alfred H. Saulniers
The Acushnet Public Library welcomes Alfred H. Saulniers to share his new book, The French of New Bedford, on Saturday, December 7, at 12:30 pm. The French of New Bedford is the most comprehensive account of New Bedford’s French communities, focusing on their histories from the 1600s to the mid-1930s.
Far from a slim book of pictures and trivia, The French of New Bedford: The Early Years is an intricate history of how immigrants create community in America. The book includes approximately 350 rare historical photographs of people, places, and celebrations; sports events, clubs, businesses, industries, and streets and neighborhoods where the French thrived.
The French of New Bedford will be available for sale and signing. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Acushnet Public Library.
Author Alfred Saulniers was born and raised as a French speaker in Acushnet, MA, graduating from Bishop Stang High School in Dartmouth, MA. He went on to earn a Ph. D. in economics from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He then taught at the University of Michigan, the University of Texas at Austin, and Harvard University. His long-term academic and consulting foreign residencies included Peru, Zaïre, Kenya, Morocco, and Pakistan.
After his return to New Bedford and the South Coast, Massachusetts region in 2000, Saulniers served as the lead writer for Spinner Publication’s two volumes of The Picture History of New Bedford. This latest book, The French of New Bedford, The Early Years, reflects deep pride in his - and New Bedford’s - French roots.
