2025 Indoor Mural Slam at Kilburn Mill

Through a generous grant from The Massachusetts Cultural Council and matching funds from the generous Owners of the Kilburn Mill, The New Bedford Arts and Cultural Emporium would like to announce its 2025 Indoor Mural Slam Competition at The Kilburn Mill. Each Winner will receive $1,500.oo Here is a general outline of our competition, all details, regulations and criteria can be found on our website. Read all info, as you will initial a contract if chosen! General Information This is a fun juried art competition. Two Artists will be chosen among the Applicants submissions. The 6'x 8' original murals will be painted indoors at the Kilburn Mill at chosen locations within the building. It is open to professional and non professional artists within the greater New Bedford area. Any current residents of New Bedford, Fall River, Fairhaven, Dartmouth, Westport, Freetown, Acushnet, Marion, Mattapoisett, Rochester or Wareham may apply The Application/Submission is FREE and Includes professional jurying of up to 3 thumbnail submissions,Contestants may submit up to three 5" X 7" thumbnail ideas to be juried. Applications/Sketches will be accepted from September 15th - October 15th Winners will be announced on October 17th at noon to 1:00. A panel of professional artists will choose the final 2 contestants. Interviews with each Mural Contestant will take place at NBACE on Oct. 20th Each juried finalist will be paid $1,500.oo. Each winner may have up to 2 assistants at their own expense. Encourage volunteers. An initial payment of $300.oo for supplies may be given to each artist. The remaining $1,200.oo will be paid upon completion/signing of mural at the opening reception on November 8th. Contestants will then proceed in one dynamic weekend - One 4 hour block on Friday 10/24 for preparation of space and two 12 hour days for painting- Saturday Oct. 25 and Sunday the 26th to complete their murals. Local and online media will cover the event from Presentation and public awareness to awards ceremony. An Opening Reception to see the Murals and meet the artist will be held on Saturday, November 8th where prizes will be awarded. The Chosen Winners MUST be available to paint their murals on the weekend of October 10, 11 and 12, and to attend the Reception on October 18th. The final mural: Size - 6’ X 8’ foot is the minimum requirement of the mural, you may make the mural larger if you prefer and as large as you like. All payments remain the same. Timeline: September 15 through October 15th - Submit Application and 5”x7” sketches October 15 - 17 - Judges deliberate submissions October 17th - Winners are notified by telephone between Noon and 1:00. October 20th - Scheduled interviews to choose your mural location and sign documents. October 24 - Preparation of walls and surrounding space. Transfer image October 25 and 26 - Painting/Making of Mural !! November 8th - Opening Reception. Meet the Artists, judges, hosts.
