Science Pub: Protecting the Boreal

The Boreal Region of North America is one of the world’s last, large intact biomes, stretching from Alaska east to Newfoundland. Supporting between one and three billion birds, the Boreal’s forests, grasslands, lakes, and rivers are aptly named North America’s “Bird Nursery”. In perhaps the biggest bird conservation story that you’ve never heard, Indigenous governments and communities across the Boreal are enacting the largest and most significant land and water conservation actions in modern history. Newly protected areas, which are as big as millions of acres in size, serve as the breeding grounds of more than 300 species that winter in the U.S., the Caribbean, and Central and South America. This talk introduces the Boreal Biome, the birds that breed there, and the amazing conservation actions currently underway to protect them. Science Pubs are a casual lecture series located in fun venues across the region. Grab a drink and get comfy as you learn about North America’s bird nursery in Protecting the Boreal. Recommended for ages 10 and over.
