Treasure Coast Theatre presents the quirky comedy "The Firecracker Contest" by Beth Henley
Carnelle Scott, an orphaned woman in her 20s with a turbulent past, enters the Miss Firecracker Contest, a beauty pageant held every year on the 4th of July in her rural hometown of Brookhaven, Mississippi. Carnelle hopes that a victory will salvage her tarnished reputation and allow her to leave town in a blaze of glory. The unexpected arrival of her cousin Elain (a former Miss Firecracker winner) complicates things a bit, as does the repeated threat of Elain’s brother Delmount to sell the family homestead. But, aided by a touchingly awkward seamstress named Popeye (who is smitten with Delmount), Carnelle perseveres – leading to an adventure of unparalleled hilarity.
Filled with quirky characters and laugh-out-loud moments, The Miss Firecracker Contest is a charming exploration of self-acceptance and the pursuit of dreams.
