One of the funniest musical comedies ever written (and Sondheim’s first major success), this masterpiece is based on the Ancient Roman plays of Plautus, and as such, is set in Ancient Rome. The clever slave Pseudolus attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master Hero marry the beautiful courtesan Phyllia. Complications ensue, as disguises are donned, deception is dealt, and doors are slammed in this non-stop, madcap farce that truly epitomizes its most iconic and famous opening song: “Comedy Tonight.”
