Roadside Reveries

Lighthouse ArtCenter presents “Roadside Reveries,” a new exhibition opening Thursday, April 24, 2025, with a public reception from 5 to 7 p.m. The show runs through August 1, 2025, at Lighthouse ArtCenter’s main gallery at 373 Tequesta Drive in Tequesta, Florida. “Roadside Reveries” features the work of twenty-two contemporary artists from across Florida and the United States, each exploring the mysterious beauty of Florida vacations. With imagery and themes ranging from nostalgic roadside attractions to beaches and amusement parks, the exhibition captures the odd and uncanny experiences of living in a tourist destination. “I grew up minutes away from Weeki Wachee Springs, a legendary Florida roadside attraction,” said Curator Anthony Record. “I’ve always been inspired by the imagery and architecture of these attractions, and the paintings and sculptures made for those kinds of non-traditional art spaces, where even animals are presented as fascinating objects of observation. This exhibition brings together artworks that reference those places in different ways, with some artworks that feel like they were pulled out of a roadside attraction, including things like fantastical taxidermy, hand-painted signs, and sculptures that resemble souvenirs.” At its core, “Roadside Reveries” considers how tourist traps, resorts, and amusement parks blend history with fantasy, and nature with artifice, creating disorienting and uncanny experiences that are familiar yet strange. The artworks in the exhibition invite viewers to experience the altered states of being that vacations inspire—moments of disorientation, wonder, and revelation that reawaken our senses and recalibrate our relationships with the land, wildlife, and each other. Lighthouse ArtCenter is dedicated to inspiring, engaging, and connecting the community through art education, exhibitions, and outreach programs. The center serves over 20,000 visitors annually on its three-building campus in Tequesta, which includes a Gallery & 2D Studio, a 3D Studio, a Glass Studio, and a Jewelry & Textile Studio. Admission to the exhibition is free for members and a $5 suggested donation for non-members. For more information, visit lighthousearts.org or call (561) 746-3101.
