Beyond Words: An Otherworldly Exhibition

Acclaimed artist, writer, and tarot creator John A. Rice returns to his hometown this May with Beyond Words, a deeply personal and immersive art exhibition. The show marks Rice’s first hometown exhibit and offers a rare retrospective of his body of work—featuring not only the visionary pieces from his new project Beyond Words, but also the first full display of all 80 original artworks from his internationally beloved Mindscapes Tarot. In addition to these two cornerstone projects, the exhibition will include miniature works, large-scale oil pastel paintings, and other recent pieces from Rice’s studio. Known for his rich, atmospheric style and unique mark-making, Rice’s work explores themes of spirituality, intuition, and the unseen forces that guide our lives. "Because so much of my work is about wayfinding and discovering your authentic self, returning home to share this show feels right," says Rice, who grew up in nearby West Mifflin. "For the first time, my friends and family will get to see what I do firsthand." Beyond Words is a new project created in collaboration with psychic mediums from Lily Dale, NY. Using questions from his audience, Rice recorded a series of "art seances" and translated the messages received into emotionally charged paintings and drawings. Presented alongside the original audio, the work invites viewers into a contemplative, multisensory experience of spiritual inquiry. Rice’s Mindscapes Tarot has drawn an international following for its dreamlike, narrative quality. Rendered in vibrant oil pastels, each card presents a landscape steeped in symbolism, offering readers a reflective space rather than definitive answers. The full 80-card original series will be on public view for the first time as part of this exhibition. About the Artist: Originally from Pittsburgh, John A. Rice is an award-winning actor, writer, and artist specializing in oil pastels. As one of the few artists working in this medium, his work has sold in over 35 countries, and he runs his art shop J.A.R. Studio, NYC, out of his workspace in New York City. He is the creator of the internationally popular Mindscapes Tarot, the new illustrated A Christmas Carol, and October Shadows: Classic Ghost Stories for Halloween (Abbeville). Rice’s mission is “to foster healing, introspection, and creativity through otherworldly art—empowering the internal world so that we can enrich our outer world.” www.jarstudionyc.com Beyond Words is on view by appointment May 10–31, 2025 Opening reception: Saturday, May 10, 6-9pm
