The first months of President Trump’s second term have featured unprecedented threats to the federal judiciary and the Rule of Law. President Trump has issued hundreds of Executive Orders that seek to arrogate to himself even more power and create a unitary executive. Many of these orders challenge the operation and existence of executive agencies and commissions, as well as their appointees’ ability to remain in office.
A number of U.S. District Courts have ruled against the President. In the face of these rulings, President Trump, Vice-President Vance, Elon Musk and others have called for federal judges to be “fired” or impeached. Members of the House of Representatives have introduced Articles of Impeachment against judges.
The result of this panoply is that we are experiencing the greatest threat to judicial independence in generations.
In his talk, John E. Jones, 30th president of Dickinson College and former United States district judge for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, will address these challenges and how citizens and members of the bar must deal with them to avoid a constitutional crisis that would tear at the fabric of our democracy.
