Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Commemoration

Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Commemoration, is a solemn occasion dedicated to remembering the six million Jews who perished during the Holocaust. The event is a vital part of ensuring that the horrors of the Holocaust are never forgotten and serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of combating hatred and discrimination. In partnership with The Phoenix Symphony, the Phoenix Holocaust Association (PHA) will host its annual community-wide Yom HaShoah Holocaust Remembrance Commemoration at Symphony Hall on Sunday, April 27, 2025. The commemoration begins at 5:00 pm. A special commemoration is planned this year in honor of the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII and liberation. Highlights of the evening will include: • A procession of Holocaust survivors and their families. We currently have some 60 survivors living in the Valley, with many participating in the commemoration. • A candle-lighting ceremony to remember the six million Jewish people murdered in the Holocaust and the millions of other victims of the Nazis and their collaborators. • Prayers and songs led by local clergy across the Valley • Special performance by a Phoenix Symphony trio who will play a work by Gideon Klein, composed just days before his transport from Terezín to Auschwitz and his murder • The presentation of PHA’s Annual Shofar Zachor Award for outstanding contributions to Holocaust and genocide education. One of the most anticipated parts of the evening is hearing from our keynote speaker, Oskar Knoblauch, a Holocaust Survivor, who will share his personal story of survival. Oskar, who is 99-years old, will recount the cruelty that he suffered at the hands of the Nazis. Mr. Knoblauch is an honored presenter at schools throughout the state where he helps to educate the next generation about the horrors of the Holocaust and the importance of being an upstander and speaking up. His story (along with other survivors) can be found at: https://phxha.com/remember/#survivor-stories. The commemoration is free and open to all denominations. Enhanced security will be in place. Registration for the event is required and can be found at https://phxha.com/remember/ SPECIAL EVENT: Before the Commemoration, the Phoenix Symphony will perform Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis at 2:00 pm which will be followed by the Yom HaShoah Holocaust Remembrance Commemoration starting at 5:00 pm.
