North Scottsdale United Methodist Church to Hold Blue Christmas Service for Those Facing Loss
Sunday, December 1st, 2024 – 3:00 PM
Scottsdale, AZ – North Scottsdale United Methodist Church invites the community to attend a special Blue Christmas Service on Sunday, December 1st, at 3:00 PM. This meaningful gathering offers comfort and support to individuals experiencing loss—whether from the passing of a loved one, the end of a job, a life transition, or simply the loss of what was.
This service, also known as the “Longest Night,” is traditionally observed during the Advent season to honor those who face grief, sadness, or struggles amidst the joy-filled holiday season. Blue Christmas acknowledges the “longest night” of the year, occurring around the Winter Solstice on December 21, as well as the Feast Day of Saint Thomas the Apostle, known for his journey through doubt and faith. This unique blend of themes serves as a reminder that even in times of darkness and doubt, there is space for hope and light.
Led by Rev. Leah Bergstrom, the service will include prayers, scriptures, poetry, and songs to uplift hearts and allow people to reflect on their feelings. Candles will be lit to honor those lost, and empty chairs will be present as a visual reminder of loved ones who are no longer here. Rev. Bergstrom will share a reflection from Psalm 121, “In times of trial and challenge – in times of grief and loss – we are called to lift our eyes to God – for He is our help; our hope, and our strength.”
“As we walk through seasons of loss, we often find ourselves looking up, seeking strength and comfort,” said Rev. Bergstrom. “Our hope is that this service provides a sacred space for people to experience the presence of God and the support of others on their journey.”
All are welcome to attend this community service at North Scottsdale United Methodist Church.
