A Brush with God

Saint Lucy, whose name literally means “light,” is one of the early martyrs of the Church of Rome. Her home was in Syracuse on the island of Sicily and her feast day is December 13. Lucy’s memory is celebrated around the world and often in conjunction with sight, eyes, and light. As we walk through our process of creating her icon, we will ask her intercession on our behalf so that we might see with the eyes of faith and that our icons might be filled with light. Byzantine iconography is a very systematic and disciplined art of building an image from dark to light and from large areas to small areas. Together, we will walk through this process, each of us creating their own icon in a step-by-step process. No previous experience or innate talent is required. Join us as we pray and paint in community this Advent. We work Thursday evening after dinner, Friday evening after dinner, all day Saturday (9 am - 4 pm), and half-day Sunday (1 - 4 pm). There will be additional times available to work on a second icon for those who are interested. This is completely optional. Fee: Single, $600 includes meals and lodging; Commuter, $400 includes 2 dinners and 1 lunch. Pre-registration required. For information on double rooms, please email [email protected].
