The Rainmaker
March 20-April 26, 2025
by N. Richard Nash
Directed by Diedra Celeste Miranda
Set in a time of a paralyzing drought in the West, The Rainmaker tells the story of a pivotal hot summer day in the life of plain Lizzie Curry, whose father and two brothers are worried as much about her marriage prospects as they are about their dying cattle. Lizzy is a plain girl indeed. The brothers try every possible scheme to marry her off, but without success. Nor is there any sign of relief from the dry heat. Suddenly there appears a man called Starbuck, who claims to be a rainmaker. He promises to bring rain for $100. The bet is on. While the men are busy with antics they've agreed to, the Rainmaker turns his magic on Lizzy, who has lost all hope. Lizzie finds herself falling, against her better judgment, for this sweet-talking traveler who promises to bring rain to her family's ever-dry town. The Rainmaker then turns his magic on the girl as he persuades her that she has a very real beauty of her own. the rain comes, and so does love. A warm, funny, touching romantic play.
Awards, Accolades, Adaptations:
The Rainmaker was adapted into the popular 1956 film starring Burt Lancaster and Katharine Hepburn. "Admirable skill...and insight into the human heart...the touch of poet." New York Daily Mirror
"The notion of dreams comig true might seem a preposterous conceit in a more cynical era, yet THE RAINMAKER, N. Richard Nash's unabashedly optimistic play...still makes a handsomely staged case for miracles.." Los Angeles Times
