“Earth Sounds”: Craft Your Own Ocarina


This workshop offers a unique opportunity for participants with some clay working experience to delve into the fascinating world of ocarinas and create their very own instruments.

Introduction to Ocarinas:

Explore the history and cultural significance of ocarinas, learning the physics of how they produce sound.

Crafting Techniques:

Under the guidance of an experienced instructor, participants will gain hands-on experience with clay to create their ocarinas. Step-by-step instruction will cover essential techniques like shaping, carving, and finishing a basic pinch-pot ocarina.

Tuning and Playing:

Learn the basics of tuning your ocarina and explore simple melodies after firing.

Who Should Attend:

This workshop is perfect for anyone with an interest in music, crafting, or exploring unique instruments. Some clay working experience is recommended, as the workshop teaches advanced techniques with the goal of creating a functional vessel.

Please note that this workshop takes place in the Utility Works basement, which is only accessible via stairs. The class requires participants to be able to sit and/or stand for the duration and use their hands for two hours. There are two gender-neutral bathrooms available for students, including one that is ADA accessible.
