Bethel AME Celebrates with Jazz Vespers - "Praise in Blue"
BETHEL AME CHURCH (Moorestown, NJ) invites the community to celebrate the holidays and year end with a Jazz Vespers service – Praise in Blue will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at 3:00 pm. It will be held at the church, located at 512 N. Church Street in Moorestown.
Jazz Vespers is a new take on an old service and is typically held in the late afternoon or early evening. The service includes prayers, poetry, reflection, and music. This is the 12th anniversary of Bethel’s Jazz Vespers. The music offered will be a mixture of jazz and holiday music and is designed to get listeners into the spirit of the season.
Appearing this year will be the grammy nominated and Blues Hall of Fame musician, Junior Mack. Mack picked up a guitar at age nine and taught himself to play. His soulful style is rooted in gospel and blues. He has worked or shared the stage with artists of multiple genres including The Allman Brothers, Dickey Betts, Warren Haynes, Los Lobos, Cyndi Lauper, Robert Randolph, Derek Trucks, Jaimoe's Jasssz Band and the late David Honeyboy Edwards. Aside from his band (The Junior Mack Band), he is frequently featured with the Marshall Tucker Band, and is a founding member of the Heritage Blues Orchestra. The group received a Grammy nomination in 2013 for their album, And Still, I Rise.
Through his one-man show, Back Porch Blues, Mack takes listeners through the life and music of prominent Blues artists such as Muddy Waters, the "father of modern Chicago Blues," Son House, the famous Delta Blues singer and slide guitarist, and Mississippi Delta Blues musician, Robert Johnson.
Mack was recently featured on Broadway in Ruben Santiago Hudson's Lackawanna Blues as the show's solo musician. The show was a Broadway Critics Pick for 2021. Junior Mack is a 2011 inductee into the New York Blues Hall of Fame.
A donation of $25 is requested and all funds go to support the activities of the 2025 Women’s Day Committee at Bethel. Tickets may be reserved in advance by calling the church at (856) 235-3152.
