Hanshi Robert Scaglione learned from his Sensei, Master Ansei Ueshiro, who brought Shorin-Ryu Karate to the US in September 1962. After several years of operating schools in Titusville and at Tropical Elementary School on Merritt Island, Sensei Kurt Tezel founded the Ueshiro Merritt Island Karate Dojo on October 17, 2011, to be closer to his home. The Merritt Island Dojo was built with the sweat and hard work of senior students of area dojos. In October 2021, Sensei Tezel turned over operation of the Merritt Island Dojo to his son, Sensei Trevor Tezel, who is the current shihan (director) of the school. Class fees are $40 per month unlimited attendance plus $5 per month for each additional family member. It’s also a one-time fee of $50 for the purchase of a karate gi (uniform) and patch. Enrollment entitles you to attend unlimited classes at all affiliated dojos (in Florida) and in our worldwide system.
