Excelsior Symphony Orchestra Fall Concert

Prokofiev’s Lt. Kijé Suite concerns a brave soldier who is born, marries and goes to war. The only problem is, he doesn’t exist. He’s a bureaucratic mistake whose life grows more fantastic the more officials try to cover up their error. LeBeau’s Original Theme with Variations (arranged by Zachary May, who will conduct the program) introduces us to an underappreciated female composer of the 19th and 20th centuries who overcame many barriers to pursue a rich career. Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique follows the story of a young man so obsessed by a lover that he sees her everywhere – a fancy ball, a field, even in a fevered dream of death and a witches’ sabbath. The orchestra has scheduled an activity for children at 6:45 p.m., led by Hackley School music teacher and ESO principal oboe Heidi Chisholm. Students of all ages will create their own Lt. Kijé figure, complete with impressive uniform and hat.
