Alabama-Based Nonprofit Brings Groundbreaking Faith-Based Mental Health Training to New York City
New York, NY – The Agency for Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP), a leading nonprofit organization based in Oxford, Alabama, is proud to announce the expansion of its nationally recognized Faith-Based Support Specialist (FBSS) Program to New York City.
The FBSS initiative is designed to bridge the critical gap between mental health, substance misuse prevention, and faith-based communities. With the backing of the Alabama Department of Mental Health (ADMH) and the generous support of the Foundation for Opioid Response Efforts (FORE), a New York-based national organization, ASAP has successfully trained and certified hundreds of faith leaders across Alabama and in cities such as Kent, WA; New Orleans, LA; and Nashville, TN.
On June 27, 2025, ASAP will host a free, one-day, 8-hour FBSS training seminar at Oasis by Workville in Midtown Manhattan. This event aims to introduce faith leaders of all backgrounds to practical strategies for supporting their congregants and communities facing substance use disorders and mental health challenges. The ultimate goal is to empower leaders to become certified Faith-Based Support Specialists and work toward broader mental health outreach across the nation.
“Our faith leaders have always been the first line of defense in times of crisis,” said Seyram Selase, Executive Director of ASAP. “We believe equipping them with real-world tools and resources is one of the most powerful ways to bring hope, healing, and resilience back into our communities.”
