The Seymour Library welcomes local historians Peter and Barbara Rzasa who will give a talk on the history of the Keith Mitchell Forest. Recently the Town of Seymour purchased five acres of land along the Four Mile Brook from the Regional Water Authority thereby linking the lower and upper portions of the Keith Mitchell Forest. Hikers are now able to enjoy walking a trail from the Route 34 trailhead to the Great Hill Reservoir.
Native Americans were the first inhabitants of the Squantuck area, living along the Four Mile Brook that ran along the heart of the preserve. In the 17th century these Native inhabitants moved north as English settlers began farming adjacent land. The dammed Four Mile Brook supplied the only source of reliable industrial power in the area and the settlers soon had in operation a grist, fulling, cider and sawmills.
The remains of four dams, a tannery and keystone bridge still exist today, as well as portions of the 350 year old Woodbury Path that ran along the Forest's edge. Join the Rzasas at the Library as they describe the natural beauty, little known history and proposed future improvements for Seymour's Keith Mitchell Forest. This is a free event and all are welcome.Registration is not required, For more information please call the Library at 203-888-3903 or email [email protected] .
