America's First Cookbook:A Young Country and the Author Who Created a Culinary Time Capsule

Join John Cilio at the Seymour Library as he tells of the first true American cookbook published in America by an American author. The book self-published in 1796 was "American Cookery" by its unknown Amelia Simmons. The cookbook reflects the rich tapestry of early American cuisine--a melting pot of European traditions, Native American ingredients and innovative cooking techniques. Little is known about its enigmatic orphan author Amelia Simmons.. But her book shows a glimpse into her cooking methods and the ingredients of her time while showing a blend of practicality and creativity in the kitchen. Her cookbook was a culinary milestone that was so popular it went through thirteen editions in its publishing history. John Cilio will reflect on the enduring legacy of this ground breaking cookbook and Simmons' life and accomplishments that have helped shaped the course of American cuisine over the centuries.
