DESCRIPTION: Angela Davis hosts a special North Star Journey Live on May 6, reflecting on and commemorating the 2020 murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Angela will host a panel conversation about what has changed for black communities in Minnesota in the 5 years since his death. WHAT: North Star Journey Live - Creating time and space to reflect upon the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the murder of George Floyd. MPR host Angela Davis will lead a panel discussion with Black leaders addressing what has changed these past five years, what has taken root, and the healing and rebuilding that still needs to happen. MPR News’ North Star Journey Live will bring together Black leaders in South Minneapolis for a candid conversation. They will reflect on what has changed, what hasn’t, and what justice really looks like when defined by the people most impacted. WHO: The conversation will be moderated by MPR host Angela Davis. Angela Davis is the host of MPR News with Angela Davis, a weekday talk show that airs at 9 a.m. She joined MPR News in November 2018 after more than 25 years of television reporting and anchoring in the Twin Cities and other cities throughout the country. Davis leads conversations on a wide variety of topics, including how the state is changing, Minnesota’s persistent racial disparities, economic issues, education, and mental health. The program includes insight from experts and listeners who call in during the live broadcast. PANELISTS: • Angela Harrelson, George Floyd’s aunt and registered nurse • Anthony Taylor, community development lead for the Cultural Wellness Center and outdoor educator-activist • Jeanelle Austin, founder of the Racial Agency Initiative and a board member for the George Floyd Global Memorial • Jerome Richardson, cofounder of the youth-led Minnesota Teen Activists • Signe Harriday, artistic producing director at Pillsbury House + Theatre and lead local organizer for the Million Artist Movement • Tabitha Montgomery, executive director of the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association WHERE: Pillsbury House Theatre // 3501 Chicago Avenue South // Minneapolis, MN 55407 WHEN: Tuesday, May 6th from 6 pm-7:30 pm WHY: This is the fifth anniversary of George Floyd’s killing by police in South Minneapolis. His name is known around the world, and his death sparked a global uprising. For the Black communities in Minneapolis, however, the story didn’t begin there, and it hasn’t ended. Long before 2020, these communities were organizing, creating, and demanding change. In the immediate aftermath, promises were made — to invest in racial equity, to transform business practices, and to reckon with systems of harm. Some progress followed. Cultural conversations shifted. Corporate and civic institutions pledged to see the world through a new lens. Still, in the neighborhoods where George Floyd lived and died, the question remains: Has that change truly taken root? What does healing require when the spotlight fades, but the work continues? TICKETS: This event is FREE and open to the public, however, registration is requested.
