Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie

NOTHING CAN PREPARE YOU FOR THIS MOVIE When their plan to book a show at the Rivoli goes horribly wrong, Matt and Jay accidentally travel back to the year 2008. Blah blah blah blah blah. Starring the Canadian comedy duo of Jay McCarrol and Matt Johnson (BLACKBERRY), who also directed, this movie is best enjoyed with an ice-cold bottle of Orbitz. We (including our founder Tim League) think it's one of the best movies of the year, and here's three reasons why he thinks you will too: #1: Matt Johnson If you know his work, you know that he is a raw force of energy and "chaotic good" humor. From THE DIRTIES to BLACKBERRY to this, Matt immediately makes you smile from first frame to last. And if you haven't seen his work, after NIRVANNA, you have a wonderful reverse chronology journey ahead of you. #2: It's bonkers in all the right ways Crazy, clever, audacious, nimble, and very punk, NIRVANNA mixes Jackass energy with serious storytelling chops, and so many laugh-out-loud moments. #3: It's truly touching and tender NIRVANNA THE BAND THE SHOW THE MOVIE is one of the most beautiful portraits of friendship I've ever seen. There are two pivotal moments – one at the beginning and one at the end – that perfectly and succinctly capture what is truly amazing about having a best friend. I’m warm and fuzzy now just remembering them both. If you know nothing about this movie, keep it that way. Don't let any fools spill the beans (other than knowing it has NOTHING to do with the band Nirvana – most people find that to be a relief). Come in cold. Just know it's wonderful in all the right ways. It's the type of movie that makes you fall in love all over again with going to the cinema. Literally everyone should see this – it’s a true four-quadrant movie. I love it SO MUCH. After watching it at SXSW, I took my twin 13-year-old girls to see it along with six of their friends. None of them had any clue about Matt or most of the cultural references and themes in the movie. All eight of them fell head over heels in love. Next up, I'm going to show it to my mom. Drafthouse Recommends is one of the most important things I helped develop back in the day at Alamo. I'm so happy it continues to thrive and that the current programming team chose a movie as special as this to get behind. We want to earn your respect with Drafthouse Recommends so that when the next really special movie comes along and we apply this label, you'll trust us. And if you already have our trust, boy howdy, don’t miss this one! – Tim League, founder, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
