MARIE ANTOINETTE

Sofia Coppola and Kirsten Dunst go together like the decadence of chocolate and wine. MARIE ANTOINETTE was THE FAVOURITE and The Great before writer Tony McNamara dreamed them up, a middle finger to the formulaic big dress dramas that populated the BBC and theaters during the 2000s. With MARIE ANTOINETTE, Coppola brought New York City indie rock to 18th century France, with Julian Casablancas singing “I wanna be beside her / She wanna be admired” as the last queen of France runs through the luxurious palace halls after falling in love at first sight. There’s an airy teenage wasteland quality to Coppola’s pastel dream of the past that’s so breathlessly inviting, and it commands to be seen on the biggest screen possible with champagne in one hand and cake in another.
