CHARLIE'S ANGELS - QUEER FILM THEORY 101

“Good morning, angels!” In the year 2000, we entered the dawn of a new age. Low-rise jeans riddled the landscape as far as the eye could see, camera phones shifted how society documented their lives, and “Oops…” Britney Spears “Did It Again” with the release of her multiplatinum second album. Amongst all these developments, music video director McG released his feature film directorial debut CHARLIE’S ANGELS. This reboot of the popular '70s television series is one of the most 2000s things ever to exist! Natalie, Dylan, and Alex (Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu) are private investigators working for mysterious millionaire Charlie Townsend. When the trio is tasked to locate missing software developer Eric Knox, they find themselves wrapped up in a conspiracy of dizzying proportions. Vacillating between male gaze-centered cheesecake and action femme camp, CHARLIE’S ANGELS confused audiences and left them wondering who exactly the film was for. Reevaluation has reclaimed this “guilty pleasure” as a piece of sapphic gateway cinema that introduced millions to the pleasures of goofy women kicking ass and being something “a little more than friends.” Like, these women are in a polycule – there's no question of that – and their flirty relationship is the highlight of the film. Featuring absurd gravity (and logic)-defying wire work, dozens of ridiculous disguises, a bizarre performance from Crispin Glover, and a trio of leads having a blast together, CHARLIE’S ANGELS is a wild great time at the movies. See you at the cinema, angels!
