Before there were cult movies, slasher films, Hitchcock or Tarantino, there was “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.” If you’ve never seen this groundbreaking, classic German 1920 relic of the silent film era, now’s your chance to see it as it was originally intended: with live musical accompaniment!
On Sunday, December 1 at 7:30 pm the Jazz Gallery Center for the Arts in Riverwest will screen “Dr. Caligari” with a live/improvised score from Barry Paul Clark, Warren Enstrom, Steve Gallam, and Pedro Gutierrez, all of whom are prominent members of Milwaukee's experimental music community. This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity…an early Thanksgiving feast for the eyes and ears!
Doors will open at 7 pm on December 1; the film and music will roll at 7:30 pm. There is a $10 cover charge to attend.
“The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari,” though superficially a story of murder and insanity, is so much more…a complex mixture of themes including “authority” (a significant issue in post-WW I Germany), conformity, the boundaries of sanity, and the perception of reality.
“Dr. Caligari” has been widely praised as a revolutionary film, one which renowned movie critic Roger Ebert dubbed “the first true horror film.” For more on the film, go here: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0010323/
Whether you’ve previously seen Caligari” or have never had the opportunity, this is a rare chance to not only absorb an extraordinary on-screen visual treat, but to simultaneously experience the surprise and wonder of hearing a film score composed and performed in real time!
