Civil War Memorial Day event led by Archbishop, cannon, band

Milwaukee’s new archbishop, Jeffrey S. Grob, will preside over a Memorial Day commemoration at Calvary Cemetery, and will fire the cannon of Cushing’s Battery. The event is held by C.K. Pier Badger Camp # 1, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and Camp and Auxiliary 4. They have been Milwaukee patriotic institutions for nearly 125 years. Grob, a Wisconsin native and an auxiliary bishop in Chicago, was named by Pope Francis to the Milwaukee job last November. Grob was born in Madison and is a native of nearby Cross Plains, growing up on dairy farm. His two predecessors, Jerome Listecki and now-Cardinal Timothy Dolan, presided at the Memorial Day event multiple times, with auxiliary bishops appearing in several other years. The Roman Catholic Mass begins at 10 a.m., and the Camp event immediately follows, at about 11 a.m. The 1st Brigade Band will perform at each part of the event, playing on vintage Civil War Instruments. The keynote speaker will be Coast Guard Reserve Capt. Kendel D. Feilen, whose service began in 1978 and included the Persian Gulf War and extended duty after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Feilen retired from the Coast Guard in 2004. During all his service, Feilen also served in the Milwaukee Police Department, starting in 1975 and retiring as a sergeant in 2002. The event also features an address by Abraham Lincoln, and rifle salutes by the Iron Brigade Guard and American Legion Police Post # 415, along with an escort by the 29th Colored Infantry, Co. F. Participants will be asked to decorate a veteran’s grave with a U.S. flag as they leave.
