"Ayer dejé de matarme" (Yesterday, I Stopped Killing Myself) is a powerful play by Cuban playwright Rogelio Orizondo, making its U.S. debut at the Display Miami Stage Fest. This performance intricately weaves together various stories that invite reflection on significant social issues, the role of theater in society, and the actors' self-examination of their craft.
Adapted and directed by Erom Jimmy, this version features prominent actors Lili Rentería, Juan David Ferrer, Lester Martínez, Gretell Barreiro, and Kiara Lemus. The performance's proximity between actors and audience, coupled with the narrow stage space, offers an immersive experience where intense character conflicts unfold. The line between reality and theater blurs as the audience is invited into a world of raw, emotional confessions, leaving them uncertain whether these moments are drawn from the actors' personal lives or are part of the characters' scripted narrative.
The Display Miami Stage Fest aims to bring together playwrights, actors, researchers, and theater theorists for a unique exploration of contemporary theater. On Opening Night, January 24th at 6PM, playwright Rogelio Orizondo will be available for a discussion with the audience. All ticket-holders are invited to attend prior to the performance.
Additionally, Antonia Fernandez, a renowned actress and researcher from Cuba, will offer a masterclass on "International Exhibition of Independent Theatre and Dramaturgy" on Saturday, January 25th at 3PM. Separate ticket purchase is required.
This event promises to be a rich cultural experience for theater enthusiasts and professionals alike.
This play is performed in Spanish.
