Immerse yourself in the vibrant world of "A Disappearing Landscape: Art of the Florida Highwaymen", an evocative gallery exhibit celebrating the distinctive artistry of the Highwaymen. This collection showcases the works of a remarkable group of self-taught Black artists who rose to prominence in mid-20th century Florida. Known for their lush, dynamic depictions of the state's natural beauty, the Highwaymen captured the essence of a rapidly changing landscape.
The exhibit features a selection of paintings that highlight the region's serene coastal vistas, sprawling wetlands, and sun-drenched horizons. Through their bold use of color and fluid brushstrokes, these artists not only portrayed Florida's idyllic scenes, but also subtly commented on the environmental and cultural shifts around them.
Here for a limited engagement, and for the first time featuring portraits of all 26 artists commissioned from the nephew of Highwaymen James Gibson, don't miss this opportunity to see rarely-seen Florida Highwaymen paintings from private collections, and take in what some have called "the last great American art movement of the 20th century."
On display in the Gallery and included with your regular admission to Flamingo Gardens. On display January 4 - February 23, 2025.
