A new exhibition at Historic Rowayton, “Gifts Unwrapped” will be open Sunday, December 1 from 4 to 6 pm. “Gifts Unwrapped” is a short history of Christmas gift-giving. The custom of exchanging gifts had its origins in Roman festivals, Medieval celebrations, Victorian inventiveness and of course, the journey of the Magi to present gifts to the Christ child. Most mid-winter festivities were held in the streets and fields, often around bonfires. However, with the arrival of the Dutch in this country, Christmas with its customs and gift giving was moved from the streets into the home and hearth.
Recognizing this, and in the spirit of the season, Historic Rowayton invites you to come and help us open our surprise Christmas gift to the area. Historic Rowayton is located in Pinkney Park, 177 Rowayton Avenue in Rowayton. The Vintage Dibble General Store Exhibit and gift shop Seaside Delights will also be open as well as the Holiday Bazaar in the tent.
