WORT-FM presents the joyous concert “Tunes for Toni: A Jazz Community Celebration,” featuring performances by a revolving cast of 18 of Madison’s finest jazz musicians:
• Vocals: Gerri DiMaggio, Sally de Broux, and Betsy Ezell
• Saxophone: Nick Bartell, Austin Cebulske and Eric Koppa
• Trumpet: Paul Dietrich
• Piano: Chris Rottmayer and Paul Muench
• Guitar: Richard Hildner Armacanqui and Bob Pesselman
• Bass: Peter Dominguez, Laurie Lang, Nick Moran, and John Schaffer
• Drums: Matt Endres and Jim Huwe
• Percussion: Rich Larson
This concert is a celebration and appreciation of the community that came together this Summer and Fall to support behind-the-scenes jazz hero Toni Jakovec during her struggle with cancer. And if she gets good news from her medical team in November, the concert will also celebrate her cancer-free emergence from a most challenging course of treatment. (If Toni learns that she will, instead, need another round of chemo, the concert will become a fundraiser for her.)
ABOUT TONI. Toni Jakovec has edited our community’s free monthly Greater Madison Jazz e-newsletter for the past 8 years, coordinated the UW-Madison Continuing Studies PLATO Jazz class for 5 years, and wrote successful grant proposals that supported local musicians, venues, and nonprofit jazz organizations. And when COVID hit and live music venues shut down in 2020, Toni launched a series of outdoor jazz concerts in her west side Madison neighborhood that continue to this day. Those efforts – and her spirit – were captured beautifully in the documentary short film, "Mondale Courting," https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAxEhWoZXjs, that was screened at the 2023 Wisconsin Film Festival.
