Illness, mental health, recovery, and autonomy are never the affair of just one person — they necessarily intertwine the lives and pursuits of others. The question of what we owe ourselves versus what we owe each other is heightened when one person suffers from a progressive neurological disease that threatens the identity of all involved. This year’s Bioethics Symposium examines this question in a creative new way.
We are staging a reading of Homo Ex Machina, a new play by Karola Kreitmair, PhD, associate professor of medical history and bioethics, that exposes the existential fallout a brain implant wreaks on the relationship between two women who grapple with finding themselves in the aftermath of radical change. An expert panel featuring neurologist Eran Klein, MD, PhD, (Oregon Health and Sciences University), philosopher Ariela Tubert, PhD, (University of Puget Sound), and ethicist Arthur Derse, MD, JD, (Medical College Wisconsin) will explore the underlying morality of fashioning oneself amidst our entanglements with others.
