The People and The Enemy, a play at Kleinhelter Gallery, New Albany Jan. 24, 25, 27, 30, 31, Feb. 1

The Chamber Theatre flows into its 2025 season with The People and The Enemy. Based on Henrik Ibsen's 1882 work, En Folkfiend, typically translated as An Enemy of The People, the play has been repeatedly revived across the world, though none quite like this reinterpretation. It is a fitting piece to commence our season's exploration of how we can all work together to make the world a better place. Directed by Artistic Co-Director Martin French, this exploration of the original play by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen features actors Kate Bariteau, Ev Davis, Fløren K, Marc McHone, Jeannette McKenna, Sassy Nuvelle, Jude Stivers, Cali Thompson, and Rayann Walker. The People and The Enemy will be hosted by the Kleinhelter Gallery, located in the 1858 historic Weinmann Building at 701 E. 8th Street, New Albany, IN, and will run for six performances. Can we recognize the waters of the Rubicon when we are wading in them? Would we know what to do when the idea of what is just is challenged? Is there in Truth no Beauty? Artistic Co-Director and director of The People and The Enemy, Martin French, says, “All good theatre work responds to its time, but the best engages with its audiences again and again, differently with every passing generation. We want to find the point of audience engagement with the play today, as we enter a new political age.” Artistic Co-Director Michelle Lori, says, “This play explores a quest for authenticity and reveals what it tastes like when it finally pours out. Be careful, once it is out there is no putting it back in the bottle!” Artistic Co-Director Jay Padilla-Hayter, says, “Our last year was our busiest ever, and we had more people engaged with us than ever before. This already looks like a great way to start our next season!“
