Give a Beat (GAB), the music-based nonprofit lauded for changing the course for incarcerated individuals, proudly presents “Groove for Good”, an inspiring evening of music and community on Friday, December 6, 2024, from 9:00pm to 2:00am at The Stowaway in Downtown Los Angeles. The evening unites renowned DJs committed to social justice with alumni from Give a Beat’s transformative On a New Track (OANT) reentry mentoring program. The event brings together members of the legendary Beat Junkies—Icy Ice and Mr. Choc—along with Spiñorita from NTS Radio, DJ Kita from Hood Rave, BB Shaine from GRN+GLD, and Thurston from the Beat Junkie Institute of Sound, alongside OANT alumni.
“Groove for Good” is complimentary with an RSVP on Eventbrite. Donations are welcome and will support Give a Beat’s ongoing efforts to provide career pathways and creative outlets for justice-impacted individuals. The venue is located at 416 S Spring St, Los Angeles, CA 90013. To register, please visit https://www.eventbrite.com/e/groove-for-good-registration-1049016415337
Hosted by On a New Track graduate Anthony McDuffie Jr., the lineup also includes OANT alumni geriFree and Pelligroso. The Stowaway’s main rooms will offer attendees two musical experiences with one room focused on hip hop/R&B and the second space reserved for house music. While special guest speakers share personal stories of transformation through Give a Beat’s programs, there will be material on hand designed to further raise awareness about the organization’s mission to reduce recidivism.
Several of the evening’s guest artists—Icy Ice, Thurston, and Kita—participated in Give a Beat’s landmark Prison Electronic Music Program (PEMP), a rehabilitative initiative offering hands-on DJ and production training to incarcerated individuals in California state prisons. DJ Thurston shared, “Working with Give a Beat was one of the most fulfilling experiences of my career. Music has such a unique way of connecting and empowering.” Both Spinorita & BB Shaine are also Teaching Artists in Give a Beat’s adult and youth programs.
The event mixes renowned DJ artistry with the resilient stories of formerly incarcerated creatives, showcasing music’s ability to heal, connect, and inspire new beginnings. The organization’s new record label, Give a Beat Records, was born out of this same socially conscious philosophy. geriFree and Pelligroso are two of the talented performers to become featured artists on the label.
