FROWN POW’R has unfinished business. Thirteen years ago, your favorite Clark County noise rascals quietly split up to pursue their different paths, but never really “broke up.” The original lineup — JT Tarpley, John Babb, Blake Phillips, Marshall Dunn, and Paul Fennig — kept in close contact and continued to write and accumulate new ideas. In the fall of 2024, the Five Frownding Fathers joined longtime friend Charles Murphy IV and feels-like-longtime friend Lemuel Hayes to form a new Frown Pow’r (the structure of which has always been a bit non-Newtonian, anyway) at County Q Productions in Nashville, Tennessee. The result of this whirlwind two-day session with engineer Mike Purcell was their new, three-song EP titled simply “F.P.E.P.” self-released on streaming platforms November 9, 2024.
Now, after aging gracefully without gaining enough wisdom to gunk up the works, the Frown Pow’r boys are returning to their homebase at the legendary White Water Tavern stage—not to tie up loose ends from all those years ago, but to start anew and create more tangled threads to chase down sometime later, when the time isn’t quite right.
As David Fair of Half Japanese once raved, “Frown Pow’r sounds like The Beatles if they came from the U.S. instead of England and kept playing in a little club instead of touring the world. And I mean that all in a good way. Maybe if The Beatles had followed this path they would’ve ended up this good.”
Are Frown Pow’r still better than The Beatles, years later? Only one way to find out.
