Reading The Hugos: Old Man's War

A book club in which we read current and potential Hugo Award nominees. The Hugos are one of the most prestigious awards for Science Fiction and Fantasy media, and one of only a few major awards that are actually voted on by readers! Let's get together to discuss current and potential future Hugo Award nominees and decide whether we would vote for them or not. The book selection for June is Old Man's War by John Scalzi. At seventy-five years old, John Perry is after a fresh start – so, naturally, he joins the army. Earth's military machine can transform elderly recruits, restoring their lost youth. But in return, its Colonial Defence Force demands two years of hazardous service in space. This is how Perry finds himself in a new body, crafted from his original DNA. A genetically enhanced and upgraded new body, ready for battle. But upgrades alone won't keep Perry safe. He'll be fighting for his life on the front line as he defends humanity's colonies from hostile aliens. He'll pay the price for his choices, and he'll discover the universe is even more dangerous than he imagined. For teen and up readers. Books can be checked out at any NLRPLS library location or online on the Libby app. We meet at Larry's Pizza in North Little Rock. Look for the table which has the book club sign. Feel free to plan to eat dinner there or just come for the discussion! For more information, contact Megan at [email protected]. No registration required.
