Have you been interested in learning how to make your yard more eco-friendly? You are in luck, the 14th annual Kansas Healthy Yards Expo will have resources, education, and vendors that can help you achieve your mission. The Expo will take place on April 11th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Shawnee Civic Centre, located at 13817 Johnson Drive in Shawnee. This event is free to attend.Visitors to the Expo can: · Register for door prizes! · Visit with K-State Johnson County Extension Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists. Listen to informative speakers on topics such as native plants, pollinators, vegetable gardening and landscaping. · Get a Free Tree Seedling (while supplies last) · Talk with city representatives to find out what’s going on in your neighborhood and learn about cost-share programs for establishing rain gardens and rain barrels. · Choose from a wide selection of locally grown, organic native plants specially selected to thrive in your garden. · Kids can enjoy a free puppet show by StoneLion Puppet Theatre. Performances are at 10:30 AM and 12 PM. · Kiddos will also enjoy a traveling museum that brings soil to life, in the Soil Tunnel Trailer. · Johnson County Extension will sell DIY Radon Kits, and experts will show you how to test your home here in Johnson County. · Learn about greenhouse cleaning and cooking with herbs from Extension Master Food Volunteers. · Naturalists, nonprofit organizations, and local plant societies for expert advice. Free soil tests for Johnson County Residents. Knowing your soil nutrient levels to grow healthy plants and protect the water quality in our local streams and lakes is important. Johnson County residents get one free soil test, compliments of Johnson County Stormwater Management and K-State Johnson County Extension. Bring your soil sample to the expo.
